Another day, same news
Hackers have stolen internal company data and source code for Galaxy devices from Samsung, the South Korean tech giant confirmed today.
News of the breach was first reported earlier this month, with a hacking outfit named Lapsus$ claiming responsibility.
What was compromised?
The group, which recently hacked Nvidia, shared screenshots purportedly showing roughly 200GB of stolen data.
This includes source code used by Samsung for encryption and biometric unlocking functions on Galaxy hardware.
Below are the list of information stolen by hackers from Samsung.
- Source code for every Trusted Applet (TA) installed in Samsung’s TrustZone environment used for sensitive operations (e.g. hardware cryptography, binary encryption, access control)
- Algorithms for all biometric unlock operations
- Bootloader source code for all recent Samsung devices
- Confidential source code from Qualcomm
- Source code for Samsung’s activation servers
- Full source code for technology used for authorizing and authenticating Samsung accounts, including APIs and services
Response from Samsung?
In a statement today, Samsung did not confirm or deny the identity of the hackers, nor whether or not they had stolen data related to encryption and biometrics.
But, the company said that no personal data, belonging either to employees or customers, had been taken.
Samsung also doesn’t anticipate any impact to its business or customers.
“We have implemented measures to prevent further such incidents and will continue to serve our customers without disruption”, the company added.
This data leak comes less than a week after Lapsus$ released a 20GB document archive from 1TB of data stolen from Nvidia.
With all these available information, it looks like Samsung has suffered a major data breach that will impact the company in a very big way.
