Simple way to track and check if your data is leaked after a breach

The recent Facebook security breach compromised 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries that had personal data leaked online.

Personal details like phone numbers, Facebook IDs, birthdates, etc. were leaked as part of the breach and it is touted to be one of the biggest data breaches we have seen in the last few years.

The leaked data also revealed that Facebook’s CEO Zuckerberg uses the Signal app.

Revealing more about it, a security researcher disclosed it by posting his leaked phone number which showed that the Facebook CEO uses the Signal app.

Huh, even Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t trust WhatsApp.

While this breach will trigger multiple lawsuits and security concerns to Facebook, as a normal user you will be wondering how to check whether you are part of that breach.

There are a couple of places out there where you can find out whether your data has been compromised.

One of the best ways is to get this checked from the site Have I Been Pwned that tracks data breaches happening around the world.

Below are the steps to get this checked.

  • Open the website by using this link and enter your email address or phone number displayed in the homepage.
  • Now click on the “pwned?” button.

You will find out not only if you’ve been part of the Facebook breach, but also any other breaches in which your data may have been compromised.

Troy Hunt, the founder and creator of “Have I Been Pwned”, was considering whether or not to include a phone number search as this comes with certain privacy risks.

But ultimately he decided to add the feature so that users can find details regarding any breach that involves leaking of his/her phone number along with other personal details.

This digital world is facing multiple security breaches every day.

To protect your data and information, the minimum you can do is to enable 2FA (Two Factor authentication) across all the digital platforms and websites which you use.

And as always, stay safe and secure.
